TANZANIA, MALAWI TO COOPERATE IN THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICITY IN THE SONGWE RIVER


THE GOVERNMENTS
Of Tanzania And Malawi Have Agreed To Cooperate In The Production Of 180 Megawatts Of Electricity Using The Falls Of The Songwe River, As Well As Cooperation In The Construction Of Infrastructure That Will Connect The Grids Of Those Countries.

The Agreement Was Signed Yesterday August 11, 2023 Following The Instructions Of The Presidents Of The Two Countries, President Samia Suluhu Hassan And President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera When They Met Recently.

It Will Be Remembered That President Samia Made A Visit To Malawi On July 5, 2023 Where, Among Other Things, The Leaders Agreed To Continue Cooperating In Various Areas To Maintain The Existing Relationship.

Speaking At The Signing Of The Agreement In Dar Es Salaam, The Minister Of Energy, January Makamba And The Minister Of Energy Of Malawi, Ibrahim Matola, Together Said That The Cooperation Will Bring Benefits To Both Countries, Especially In The Electricity Sector.

Even So, Minister Makamba Has Explained That Their Agreement In The Energy Sector Covers Three Areas, First Of All To Generate Electricity Together In The Project To Generate Electricity With Water Power In The Songwe River.

He Said It Will Also Be About Cooperation In The Search, Research And Joint Extraction Of Gas And Oil And Cooperation In The Construction Of Electrical Infrastructure.

Minister Makamba Has Said That There Will Be A Joint Committee Of Ministers And A Committee Of Experts Where Each Side Will Appoint Experts And The Sessions Will Officially Start In October This Year.

"Due To The Instructions Of Our Leaders, President Samia Suluhu And President Chakwera Agreed That We Should Increase The Areas Of Cooperation, Especially In The Area Of Energy.

"This Is Part Of The Regional Project To Have One Grid In This Region. We Believe These Projects Will Benefit Our Countries Because The Electricity Needs Are Still Great, This Cooperation Will Strengthen The Relationship Between Our Countries," Said Makamba.

He Has Also Said That The Feasibility Study For The Construction Of An Electricity Transmission Line That Will Connect Those Countries Has Already Been Completed And Now They Are Looking For Funds To Begin Implementation.

And Malawi's Minister Of Energy, Ibrahim Matola, Has Said That Many Countries In Southern Africa And The East African Community Still Do Not Have Enough Energy, So It Is Important To Have More Projects In That Sector.

He Emphasized That The Agreement Is The Beginning Of Their Journey To Cooperate In Many Fields. "President Samia And President Chakwera Agreed To Work Together For The Benefit Of These Nations. It Is Important That We Have More Projects In The Energy Sector," Said Matola.
