CITIZENS CAUGHT up
in the civil war in Sudan have given candid accounts about rape, ethnic
violence and street hangings. Our journalists have managed to reach the front
line of the fighting near the capital, Khartoum.
Senior UN officials have
said the conflict has plunged the country into "one of the worst
humanitarian nightmares in recent history" and could lead to the world's
worst famine.
There are also fears that in Darfur, in the west of the country, a repeat of what the United States called a genocide 20 years ago may be starting to emerge.
