THE MINISTER of
Construction, Innocent Bashungwa, has instructed the Kinondoni District Police
Commander (OCD), Mohamed Senkondo, to arrest the Project Manager of the China
Railway Seventh Group (CRSG), who is carrying out the construction of the Mpiji
Chini Bridge (140 meters) along with the connecting road ( Km 2.3), Asked to
Start Taking Action for Delaying the Construction of the Bridge and Connecting
Road.
The order was issued on
April 30, 2024 in the Dar Es Salaam Region after the Minister Bashungwa inspected
the effects of the rain and the area where the Mpiji Bridge will be built which
will connect the Dar Es Salaam Region to the coast and dissatisfaction with the
reasons for delaying the preparations to start construction.
"We can't continue
to flatter each other, this contractor has been a troublemaker in his projects
and this is the fifth project, OCD entrusts this contractor to you to explain
and give them the contract he signed so that we can start taking action,"
Bashungwa stressed.
In addition, Bashungwa
has explained that the CRSG contractor has been a contractor in the
implementation of other road projects including Sanzate - Nata in Mara Region,
Kibaoni - Mlele Road in Katavi Region, Amani Mahoro - Luanda Road in Ruvuma
Region and other projects that he has been given construction work for.
Bashungwa has asked the
CEO of the China Railway Seventh Group to come to his office and explain that
the government will continue to press the contractor to ensure that he brings
the machinery and workers needed in the Mpiji Bridge project so that when
summer starts construction of this bridge will start construction immediately.
And, the Manager of
TANROADS Region of Dar Es Salaam, Engineer John Mkumbo has explained that the
contract for the construction of the bridge and connecting road was signed on
January 30, 2023, and the contractor was handed over the construction site on
May 22, 2023 where the project will be implemented for a period of 24 months at
a cost Of 21 billion shillings.
Engineer Mkumbo has
explained that the equipment brought for the implementation of the project is
46 percent of what is required according to the contract with 6 of the 10
experts required by the contract where in general the contractor has made
construction preparations for 58 percent.
For his part, the Head of
Kinondoni District, Saad Mtambule, has explained that the bridge connects the
Dar Es Salaam region to the coast through the villages of Maputo and Kiembeni
and when it is completed, it will be a great liberator because for a long time
citizens have been going around the long way to get in and out of their homes.
