THE Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) has officially announced the schedule for the 2025 General Elections which will include the election of the President of Zanzibar, Members of the House of Representatives and Councillors.
Speaking to journalists today, the ZEC Chairman, Judge George J.
Kazi, said that by virtue of the powers vested in him under section 34(3) and
(4) of the Electoral Act No. 4 of 2018, the General Elections will be held on
Wednesday, October 29, 2025.
Furthermore, in accordance with the said Act, there will be early
voting which will be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, one day before the
general election.
The special voting will enable the officials and soldiers in
charge of election activities to vote before the day when all citizens vote.
Early voting will involve Returning Officers, Polling Station
Managers, Election Assistants, Police Officers on duty, as well as Members and
Executives of the Electoral Commission.
Kazi said “This measure aims to ensure that staff overseeing the
election exercise do not miss the opportunity to exercise their constitutional
right to vote”
According to ZEC, preparations for the election have begun early
to ensure that the exercise is conducted in a transparent, peaceful and secure
manner. The Commission has stressed that it continues to collaborate with
political parties, civil society organizations and international stakeholders
to ensure that this year’s elections are free and fair.
Similarly, citizens have been asked to continue to maintain peace
and solidarity in the run-up to the election. The Commission has called on all
voters to ensure that they turn out in large numbers by October 29, 2025 to
exercise their democratic right.
