THE PARTY for Democracy and Development (CHADEMA) has called on all Tanzanians to participate in the Holy Novena prayers being held under the Catholic Church, which will conclude on August 23, 2025, with the aim of praying for peace, justice and national unity for the nation.
In a public statement signed by CHADEMA (Tanganyika) Vice Chairman, John Wegesa Heche on Friday, the party has called on its members and all Tanzanians in general to join with the believers of the Catholic Church in this national prayer.
“Recognizing that August 23 is the day to conclude these prayers, Chadema calls on all Tanzanians to join with the believers of the Catholic Church, in the Holy Novena prayers on August 23, 2025, in praying for our Nation for justice and peace, knowing that as the Holy Bible says; Isaiah 32:17: "And the work of justice shall be peace; and the fruits of justice will always be peace and hope”, said Heche.
In addition, Heche has revisited the history of political struggles led by the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, explaining that Nyerere even involved the power of God in demanding Tanganyika's independence. He has recalled the political challenges that emerged in previous elections, including those in 2019, 2020 and 2024, where the party has said there were violations of human rights and democratic rights.
“Between 1955 and 1959 Mwalimu J. K Nyerere began to mobilize Tanganyikans to demand political independence from the British Colonizer. He told the Tanganyikans that we would demand the British Colonizer to give us our independence. If he refuses, we will go to the United Nations and if they do not accept us, we will go to complain to God”.
According to Heche, the party believes that joint prayers will build Tanzanians with courage, wisdom and solidarity, saying: “this is the time to unite as one family of Tanzanians before God, asking him to open the way for justice, freedom, and respect for the dignity of each of us”.
