GOVERNMENT Chief Medical Officer, Dr Grace Maghembe, has called on senior doctors at referral hospitals to consider prior communication before referring a patient to a regional hospital to provide immediate assistance to the patient.
She said this while opening a regional working session on improving medical services at Benjamin Mkapa Regional Hospital with regional senior doctors and senior doctors at regional referral hospitals, which was accompanied by a visit to review the status of service delivery.
She said the move will enable the patient to be assisted before the time of transportation and will also reduce the costs that patients have to spend on travel and treatment, ultimately helping to save the lives of many citizens.
“Before bringing the patient, let us contact each other first to see if the relevant service can be obtained through the exchange of knowledge or whether the patient should be brought directly to Benjamini Mkapa Regional Hospital. This will help reduce the financial burden on patients and time,” stressed Dr Maghembe.
In addition, Dr. Maghembe has called on physicians and doctors from the regions, referrals, and referral hospital specialists to be ambassadors to sensitize citizens in their areas about the services provided by Benjamini Mkapa Hospital.
“Benjamini Mkapa has significantly improved its services in terms of both primary and secondary care and you are all witnesses, so when you return to our facilities, be ambassadors to explain how citizens will be helped when they come for examination or treatment at Benjamini Mkapa Hospital,” She explained.
She has asked these physicians to send staff to learn emergency services at the regional emergency services training center, Benjamini Mkapa regional hospitals to reduce referrals.
