AN EQUATORIAL Guinea court has sentenced #BaltasarEbangEngonga, the former head of the National Financial Intelligence Unit, to eight years in prison for embezzlement of public funds.
According to the High Court’s Director of Information, Hilario Mitogo, the Bioko Regional Court convicted Engonga of misusing official travel funds for his personal gain.
Engonga, also known by the nickname “Bello”, gained international fame in November last year after sex videos of him and the wives of other officials were leaked online while he was in custody awaiting trial. The incident sparked online jokes and mockery, including the creation of a fake drug called “Balthazariem.”.
The court also fined him US$220,000 (TSh 542,656,026). Engonga, along with five other high-ranking officials, faced charges of misusing public funds in the oil-rich nation.
