A SPECIALIST in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) Dr Lilian Mnabwiru, has said that if a woman is experiencing symptoms of menopause, she should adopt a lifestyle change, including quitting alcohol consumption.

Speaking to Dailynews Digital in a special interview in Dar es Salaam, Dr. Lilian said that they should also stop smoking, tobacco, caffeine, and all things containing caffeine, including coffee, energy drinks, and reduce the use of sugar and salt.

“They should make changes in their lifestyle after seeing symptoms by exercising, and exercise is a cure for many things, be it regularly for 30 minutes a day that makes the body sweat, it will cause blood to circulate throughout the body and reduce bad fats in the body.

She said they should eat good foods of natural fruits according to their seasons and eat vegetables, especially those they produce at home.

She also advised them to eat foods from the seed family because many are good, for example, beans, soybeans, and all other things that are seeds are a good source to maintain estrogen hormones properly.

“We should really focus on protein-building foods, there are fish, milk, and others. After exercising and adjusting the food system, we should strive to rest by sleeping six to eight hours, which helps with health and reduces stress.

She added, “As well as doing various social work, if we leave business, office work, let’s participate in social activities such as going to church, going to discuss in the street, gardening, and others,” she explained.

Dr. Lilian said it is good to eat fewer starchy and fatty foods.

“These roasted meats, someone orders a whole kilo or half a kilo, eat them in moderation, others eat starchy foods in large quantities, they should also reduce their intake, especially rice,” she emphasized.

She said other symptoms of menopause are similar to various diseases, so she emphasizes that when a woman sees these symptoms, she should come to a health center to see a specialist and undergo proper examination, advice, and treatment.

“If it is known that she does not have any health challenges except for changes in menstruation, then we have methods to help her according to the problem that the woman has experienced. First of all, I insist that they come to a health center, for example, there are symptoms of irregular bleeding, it can be associated with another serious problem, such as cervical cancer,” Dr. Lilian explained.

She said that a health professional is the one who can tell you what your problem is after the examination.

Dr Lilian said it is important to consider the advice of experts and colleagues to understand that there are times when these women go through life challenges not out of choice but because of age and nature or the treatment they are going through.

“When you see your partner has changed emotionally or behaviorally, it is good to go with him slowly and find out what his challenges are and be able to stay with him,” she said.

She added, “Even if children see a parent has changed, they should try to follow suit. There are other symptoms of other diseases, such as memory loss, going through menopause, getting sick or another illness; getting to the hospital is important.
