THE KENYAN and Tanzanian national teams have exited the CHAN tournament today after losing in their quarter-final matches.
In the previous match played at the Kasrani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya was eliminated by Madagascar on penalties after drawing 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Tanzania lost the match after 90 minutes at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium after losing 1-0. This year's CHAN tournament is being hosted by three neighboring East African countries, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
Kenya was the first to score through Alphonse Omoja in the 38th minute, before Razafimahatratra of Madagascar equalized in the 60th minute.
After drawing 1-1 after 120 minutes, Madagascar won 4-3 on penalties, with Toky Rakotondraibe scoring the penalty after Alphonce Omija missed.
Harambee Stars, were aiming to reach the continental semi-finals for the first time in 38 years. Tanzania, like Kenya, dominated the first half and missed several clear-cut scoring opportunities.
In the 65th minute of the second half, Morocco ended Tanzania's dreams with a clean sheet scored by striker Oussama Lamlaoui.
Tanzania, which led Group B by reaching the quarter-finals unbeaten in a single match, failed to extend its dominance over Morocco thereafter. Morocco has won the CHAN championship twice while Taifa Stars are reaching this stage for the first time after participating three times.
Earlier, Taifa Stars Coach Hemed Suleiman said ahead of the game "I have looked at all the groups and I believe that every team in any group is good and can compete. We are ready to face Morocco."
In the group stage, Morocco had already won three matches and lost one against Kenya. They have scored eight goals, an average of two goals per match and conceded three goals.
