MINISTRY FUND TO TRAIN 300 HEALTH SPECIALISTS 2025/2026

HEALTH MINISTRY statement said yesterday that the training will be facilitated by the Samia health super-specialisation programme, is a fully funded scholarship scheme for healthcare professionals pursuing advanced training locally and abroad.

Medical training is the key feature in the presidential scholarship programme, apart from science education for girls, with a view to boost the country’s capacity to deliver high-quality healthcare services, reducing the need for medical referrals abroad.

The programme will not only improve access to advanced care but also lower treatment costs for treatment weighs on public coffers as well as families with such patients, and is also expected to help realise Tanzania’s ambitions to become a regional hub for health-based visitations from within the region.

“This programme is a major step toward self-sufficiency in delivering complex and high-quality medical care right here at home,” the statement affirmed, noting that beneficiaries studying locally receive tuition and research support.

Those enrolled in foreign institutions are funded for tuition, travel, research and living allowances paid at rates set by the ministry, it explained, highlighting that the scheme is offered as a grant to beneficiaries with the condition that recipients work in the country’s health sector after graduation.

The programme also supports team-based training for groups of health professionals working together to introduce specialised services in respective facilities, it said, pointing at setting up renal dialysis services for instance.

This includes funding the training of a full team, including nephrologists, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians, physiotherapists, counsellors and occupational therapists, hence ensuring a well-rounded service delivery model, it explained.

In the 2025/2026 financial year, the government has earmarked 9bn/- to support new and continuing trainees in priority specialisations, with the funding reflecting the government’s commitment to developing a sustainable, skilled and decentralised healthcare workforce across the country. The ministry has opened applications for the 2025/2026 academic year, where eligible healthcare professionals are invited to apply for sponsorship through the official portal, it added.
