The Israeli army has responded with artillery after rockets were fired at the Golan Heights, an area occupied by Israel since 1967.
"Soldiers are responding with artillery and rockets to
the area where the attack occurred in Syria," said a statement from the
Israeli army.
The army claims there have been "a number of attacks
from Syria inside Israeli territory".
A spokesman for the army has told the AFP news agency that it
appears to be a mortar fire.
This was the first exchange of fire between Israel and Syria
since Hamas launched an attack on Israel from the besieged Gaza Strip on
Saturday.
On Tuesday, Israel also exchanged fire with militants in southern Lebanon.
