DAR’S FERRY FISH MARKET GETS BULK LPG DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

THE SYSTEM, developed by stakeholders in collaboration with the government and market stakeholders, uses prepaid meters similar to TANESCO’s LUKU, allowing users to pay only for the gas they consume. This eliminates the need for gas cylinders, reduces costs, and improves efficiency.

Speaking at the launch yesterday, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila described the initiative as a milestone in enhancing safety, efficiency, and livelihoods. He noted that underground gas tanks and pipelines now supply 48 stoves at the market, each connected to its own meter.

Government officials praised the project for supporting the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy 2024–2034, which aims to have 80 percent of Tanzanians using clean cooking energy by 2030.
Energy Commissioner Innocent Luoga called the system “a model worth replicating” for reducing health risks, cutting costs and improving working conditions for food vendors.

The system was introduced after studies showed the limitations of cylinder-based gas use, including high costs and safety risks.

Ilala MP, Mussa Azzan Zungu underscored the health benefits, noting that food vendors relying on charcoal previously inhaled smoke equivalent to 300 cigarettes daily.

Dar es Salaam officials stressed the importance of expanding clean energy access, with statistics showing only three in ten residents currently use clean cooking energy. “Our goal is that by 2034, at least eight in ten will have transitioned,” said Dr. Elizabeth Mshote, Assistant Regional Administrative Secretary (Economy and Production).

Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo added that the project is vital for the city’s economy, as more than 70% of fish sold in Dar es Salaam passes through the Ferry Market.

The project cost over 250m/-, fully funded by Oryx Energies Tanzania will see traders who previously spent up to 180,000/- a day on gas, will now save around 45,000/- through the prepaid system, said Araman Benoit, Managing Director of Oryx Gas Tanzania Limited (OGTL),

The system ensures a continuous gas supply, eliminating disruptions caused by cylinders running out. Safety is reinforced with emergency valves that automatically shut off gas in case of irregularities.
